"The US policy shift in south Asia"

Introduction:
The U.S. has held a significant position in global politics as a superpower after the end of the cold war till present . The geopolitics of south Asia has strategic importance for the countries like U.S as they have a lot of economic interest connected with the South Asian countries .we have seen their policy shift in south Asia from time to time . Pakistan being a non-NATO important ally of US, was unable to secure it's vital interests during the cold war era and after 9/11 , leading to a relationship full of suspicions and mistrust.Pakistan was on the Frontline during US campaign against terrorism . India on the other side who was not the ally of US during cold war era and was not on the Frontline during the their campaign against terrorism has enjoyed special protocols with US.Chaina's increasing role in south Asia have brought US and India together and in closer cooperation which has resulted in deep strategic engagement .This was the shift of US policy few years ago .
U.S Attention Towards India 2025:
The US policy has completely changed and fully diverted ,the US aggression has increased towards India ,after the India and Pakistan recent war. Though US has played a role in ending the war .As it has been observed that US has imposed sanctions on India related to trade, tariffs were also increased. India’s involvement in the development of the Chabahar Port in Iran has drawn U.S. sanctions. The U.S. revoked India’s waiver for the Chabahar project, citing its “maximum pressure” policy on Iran.
Specifically ,India had been investing in Chabahar as a strategic gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia. The U.S. decision to revoke the exemption was described as a blow to India’s trade ambitions.
The U.S. also sanctioned Indian firms connected to Iranian oil trade, as part of broader sanctions on Iran. Under the U.S. law called Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), the U.S. can impose sanctions on countries that make major defense purchases from Russia. India’s large purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system raised concerns. Sanctions are also used to signal that the U.S. expects its strategic partners to align more closely with U.S. security policy and export controls. By imposing sanctions, the U.S. signals to India (and other countries) that India’s independent strategic decisions (such as its relations with Iran or Russia) may come with costs in its relationship with the U.S.These measures are part of broader U.S. strategies in the region ensuring that countries align with certain U.S. policy goals (e.g on Iran or Russian relations) even if they remain partners in other domains.
U.S Attention Towards Pakistan 2025:
As mentioned above that Pakistan being a non NATO important ally of America was unable to protect it's personal interest during the cold war era and the 9/11.But now in 2025 after the Pakistan and India military interventions the US policy has totally shifted from against to the favors of Pakistan .we can say that U.S attention toward Pakistan after the India-Pakistan war is not necessarily a sign of full favoritism, but rather of strategic necessity preventing escalation, managing India’s focus, and preserving influence. The U.S. retains multiple strategic interests in Pakistan access and influence related to Afghanistan, the Indian Ocean / Pakistan’s coastal position, counter-terrorism cooperation, and regional stability. A study notes that increased U.S. support and engagement with Pakistan are influenced by these factors. Moreover,Pakistan’s willingness to show itself as a “responsible actor” during the conflict increased U.S. attention.
It has also been observed that US has listed the name of Pakistan among the few countries to whom US is going to sold it's advanced air-to-air missile know as AMRAAM ( advance medium range air to air missile) .It has an advanced technology which is known as BVM( means it can hit an aircraft beyond the visible range .This can be used only in America aircraft F-16.
America has done so because Pakistan has used the air to air missile of chain known as PL-15 which can be only used in Chinese aircrafts JF-17 during it's war with India and was successful in downing the India raffles not only one but almost 6 due to which the Chinese military hardware got the top position and it's military hardware began to sell like hot cakes in the international markets. After this America also decided to give Pakistan an air to air missile so that their military hardware also get the spark and to be sold like hot cakes . In today’s shifting power landscape, Washington’s renewed attention toward Pakistan shows that global politics is not based on permanent friendships, but on permanent interests. Pakistan’s role, once overlooked, is now once again seen as central to South Asia’s balance of power.”
Why US is doing so ?
The recent shift in U.S. policy from India to Pakistan is not driven by emotions or ideology but by strategic adjustment. In international politics, interests dominate friendships. The U.S as a global superpower, review its alliances in response to emerging regional and global realities.
Firstly, the India-Russia defense network has become a source of concern for Washington. India’s continued purchase of Russian military systems like the S-400 and cooperation in energy projects with Moscow directly contradicts U.S. sanctions under CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act). This non-alignment has raised questions about India’s reliability as a strategic partner.
Secondly, India’s deepening trade and other investments in Iran, especially through the Chabahar Port project, has further complicated U.S.ties with India . The port directly challenges America’s “maximum pressure” strategy against Iran. Thus, sanctions and the withdrawal of certain waivers are Washington’s way of pressuring India to reconsider its partnerships.
On the other hand, Pakistan’s recent strategic behavior during and after the India-Pakistan conflict has made it the place of attention. Unlike in the past, Pakistan has projected a more balanced and responsible attitude in regional affairs. Its successful application of advanced Chinese technology during the war and effective defense against Indian Raffles reshaped the perception of Pakistan’s defense capabilities in the eyes of global powers.
In response, the U.S. has recognized Pakistan’s geostrategic centrality particularly its control over key access routes to the Arabian Sea, its proximity to Afghanistan, and its role as a potential stabilizing force in a weak South Asian landscape. The decision to offer advanced AMRAAM missiles for Pakistan’s F-16 fleet represents not only a defense sale but also a signal of renewed partnership.
Moreover, U.S. policymakers understand that countering China’s growing regional influence requires engagement, not isolation of Pakistan. Rather than letting Beijing become Pakistan’s exclusive partner, Washington now seeks to rebuild trust and strategic alignment with Islamabad.
In essence, the United States’ new tilt toward Pakistan and its pressure on India demonstrate that foreign policy is fluid, not fixed. What matters most is strategic utility, not historical loyalty. Washington’s shift is an attempt to reassert influence, maintain balance of power, and safeguard its long-term economic and security interests in South Asia.

What will Pakistan do now that it has gained renewed U.S. attention and will this attention be sustained or conditional?
